Momo Sissoko, a former Premier League enforcer, believes Cristiano Ronaldo will remain in England after the Qatar World Cup, telling Il Bianconero that the former Manchester United talisman could wind up at Newcastle.
It was possibly Ronaldo’s sharpest performance of the season. On the other hand, stating ‘Uncut Gems’ is Adam Sandler’s best film in recent years is a stretch. There isn’t much competition for such an honor.
Whether or not a stray hair connected with that Bruno Fernandes’ cross, Ronaldo’s performance in Portugal’s 2-0 win over Uruguay on Sunday was more like the great guy we’ve come to know over two decades at the highest level.
He appeared to be faster. Fitter. His link-play and mobility were also significantly improved.
And, following his bitter exit from Old Trafford last week – dismissed as a result of that ill-advised Talk TV interview with Piers Morgan – Ronaldo is clearly anxious to prove that, even as his 38th birthday approaches, this old dog still has life in it.
Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, is reportedly looking for a new home for his experienced client. Ronaldo has been offered to a high-flying, deep-pocketed Newcastle club. Former Juventus and Liverpool midfielder Sissoko believes St James’ Park is one of the most likely destinations for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
“I think he’ll stay in England,” Sissoko predicts. “I also saw him in Newcastle.” Only they have the means to afford him in Europe. At the very least, among the teams that are interested in him.”
However, Sissoko’s attitude does not take into account Eddie Howe’s playing style. If Erik Ten Hag can’t find a regular spot in Man United’s starting lineup for Ronaldo, it’s difficult to envisage Howe abandoning his high-pressing philosophy to accommodate a 37-year-old declining force.
Furthermore, even after the Middle Eastern acquisition, Newcastle’s transfer philosophy has remained focused on intriguing, up-and-coming players rather than established superstars.
Ronaldo was paid £500,000 per week at Old Trafford. He has claimed to turn down a £300 million offer from an undisclosed Saudi Arabian club.
