If Cristiano Ronaldo exercises the one-year contract extension clause, Manchester United will be happy to loan out the Portuguese superstar forward this summer, according to Steve Bates of the Mirror (through utdreport; via Manchester Evening News).
The future of Ronaldo at Old Trafford has been up in the air for a while. Although Man United is well into its preseason preparation for the upcoming season, he has yet to show up for preseason, and there is much conjecture regarding his future.
The former Real Madrid man came to Old Trafford last season in a move that was received with huge anticipation. Ronaldo’s first spell at Man United was nothing short of spectacular and similar things were expected this time around.
However, it is fair to say that things haven’t exactly gone as expected when it comes to the signing of the Portuguese forward. Manchester United had one of their worst seasons and went trophyless last season.
It is not to say that the 37-year-old did not deliver. Ronaldo had a very good season on a personal note scoring 24 goals and providing three assists across all competitions in 38 games for the Red Devils last season.
With Man United failing to qualify for the Champions League, it is understandable that Ronaldo wants to leave just one year upon joining us. A legend of the competition, the 37-year-old will not want to miss out on playing in the UCL for one season.
At this point, the solution Manchester United is advocating appears very logical. If he can be loaned out for one season to a club in the Champions League, he will get the football he craves and, providing the Red Devils finish in the top 4, return after that season.
Although it is not the best scenario for Manchester United and can be seen as Cristiano Ronaldo acting selfishly, sometimes these decisions must be made for the sake of all parties.
