Since the arrival of Erik ten Hag earlier this year, Aaron’s Wan-Bissaka future at Manchester United has been in doubt.
The 24-year-old has battled for playing time this season, and according to James Ducker of The Telegraph, “Ten Hag would aim to acquire a right defender in January if Manchester United can sell Aaron Wan-Bissaka.”
The story of Wan-season Bissaka thus far is brief. The Englishman has only made one appearance for the club in all competitions, a four-minute cameo in a Premier League match.
His struggle for playing time, on the other hand, should come as no surprise.
It was clear to see before Ten Hag even began his reign at the Red Devils that Wan-Bissaka was going to find it incredibly difficult to slot into the Dutchman’s style of play.
He is an incredible defender – that much cannot be questioned – and whilst he isn’t necessarily as bad with the ball at his feet as some would make out, he certainly is not technically gifted enough to thrive in the current Manchester United set-up.
It is, therefore, no surprise that the club has plans to replace him, but it will be interesting to see what caliber of player they choose as his replacement. Perhaps as recently as last season, the obvious choice would have been to bring in a new starting right-back and demote Diogo Dalot to the bench.
However, with the Portuguese reviving his fortunes at the club amid his incredible start to the campaign, Ten Hag may decide that the 23-year-old deserves to retain his starting spot, with the new signing serving as his understudy.
