Man City completes the transfer of Manuel Akanji, with a surprise signing taking the legend’s shirt number.
Manchester City has completed the £15 million acquisition of defender Manuel Akanji from Borussia Dortmund.
Switzerland international Akanji, 27, has agreed to a five-year contract extension with City until the summer of 2027. Akanji began his career with Basel before joining Dortmund in 2018, where he appeared in 158 games alongside City attacker Erling Haaland.
The addition of Akanji brings City’s summer spending to £121.7 million, following the signings of Haaland, Kalvin Phillips, and Sergio Gomez. “I’m pleased to be here and can’t wait to get started,” said Akanji, who will wear the No.25 shirt left vacant by Fernandinho’s departure this summer.
“City have been one of the best teams in Europe over the last few seasons. They are brilliant to watch, play an exciting brand of football, and compete for trophies year in, and year out, so coming here feels like the perfect next step in my career.
