Liverpool defender set to sign a new contract ahead of pre-season

By signing a new contract with Liverpool during pre-season, Joe Gomez might put an end to rumors over his future.
Joe Gomez is expected to sign a new contract with Liverpool during pre-season, according to The Telegraph. This will put an end to uncertainty about his future. The Reds and Jurgen Klopp retain faith in the defender despite his lack of regular game time at the club.

Joe Gomez had a poor season due to a lack of playing time. Jurgen Klopp took his time reintegrating the defender following an injury early in 2021. The manager had lots of choices to choose from in lieu of the English center-back, but he only employed him on occasion.

Keeping Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, and Ibrahima Konate fit throughout the season kept Gomez on the bench for the majority of the season. When called upon, however, the defender delivered at a high level, assisting the side in their pursuit of the Premier League and other trophies.

As the season progressed, speculation about Gomez’s future rose, with numerous clubs having their names linked to the center-back. The England international could have been expected to play week in and week out at those interested teams, but Klopp appears to want to keep the star within his ranks.

Depending on how Klopp rotates the team, Gomez might be Liverpool’s third or fourth center-back next season. Given the manager’s preference for rotation, he could continue to get consistent minutes and possibly start several games.

Liverpool has been intending to offer Gomez a new contract since the beginning of May, and they are on track to do so. When he returns for pre-season training, the defender could sign his contract.

After Neco Williams was loaned to Fulham, Gomez mostly covered for Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back in the second half of the season. After receiving many bids for the right-back, the Welshman may depart Liverpool in the summer. The Reds, on the other hand, have already agreed to a deal with Aberdeen for Calvin Ramsay. As a result, Gomez is more likely to be employed as a center-back in the future.

In many respects, the new contract makes perfect sense, and the Reds have done an excellent job of keeping one of their most skilled and trustworthy defenders.
