According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, signing Chelsea and England midfielder Mason Mount for Jürgen Klopp’s team would be a “major coup.”
The 23-year-old is now in Qatar with the Three Lions for the World Cup.
Mount’s contract discussions with Chelsea have apparently stagnated, with the midfielder reportedly preparing to want a £300,000-per-week deal, with the academy graduate’s current agreement expiring in 2024.
According to The Guardian, both Liverpool and Juventus are keeping tabs on the Stamford Bridge starlet, however, the Blues leadership is still confident that the forward-thinking midfielder will commit his future to the club soon.
According to the same source, Mount is now one of the lower earners in the squad (£75k per week) and would like a contract that reflects his commitment to the club since becoming a regular for the west London side at the start of the 2019/20 season.
And O’Rourke believes that it would be a “massive shock” if Mount was unable to agree on a new deal at Chelsea and made the move to Anfield.
While Mount and Chelsea appear to have reached a contract impasse, it would be surprising if the two parties did not reach an agreement before the expiration of the 34-year-old England international’s term at Stamford Bridge.
According to Transfermarkt, the former Derby County loanee has scored 32 goals and given 37 assists in 181 appearances for the Blues, and it would be surprising to see the club lose such an important player to a direct Premier League competitor.
With the contracts of Naby Keta, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and James Milner expiring at the end of the season, as well as Arthur Melo’s loan agreement expiring, Liverpool may want to move quickly on a big-name midfield target, and Mount may just suit the bill.
The Chelsea player would almost certainly get regular game time at Anfield, and if the Reds can meet his contract demands, it may be a move the midfielder makes in the forthcoming transfer window.
While Mount would not be cheap for Liverpool because Chelsea does not want to lose one of their developed talents, this could be a deal that Klopp pursues.
