Leicester City fans respond as Maddison expresses confidence in the 2022 World Cup.
The midfielder has resorted to social media to respond to Leicester City’s 2-0 triumph over West Ham United at the London Stadium.
Following an injury scare against West Ham, Leicester City midfielder James Maddison has reassured fans that he will be fit for the World Cup.
Maddison was back in action for City just two days after it was announced that he had been named to Gareth Southgate’s England team for the tournament. He was named to the starting lineup for the club’s final game before the tournament break.
And he made an instant impact, getting on the scoresheet in just the eighth minute of the game when he arrived at the back post to finish off a good team move. The goal was Maddison’s seventh of the season
But the midfielder had City and England fans sweating over his fitness when he went down unchallenged halfway through the first half of the game. After being assessed by the club’s physios, he walked off the pitch but was replaced by Dennis Praet.
Harvey Barnes added a second goal for City in the second half as they continued their good run of form. City goes into the break for the World Cup having won six of their last nine games in all competitions.
Despite the result, the first questions asked of Brendan Rodgers after the match was on the condition of Maddison. The City boss allayed fears that the player’s World Cup could be in doubt, revealing he was taken off as a precaution.
Maddison himself has now also moved to reassure supporters about the injury. The midfielder revealed a ‘small problem’, while also reacting to his opening goal and the three points picked up by the team.
“Another win & another goal. A perfect way to finish before the break,” he wrote on social media.
“Injury isn’t too bad! A small problem that was causing a bit of soreness. Can’t wait to meet up with the lads Monday.”
Maddison will be looking to continue to impress when he meets up with the squad next week. Should he feature in any of the Three Lions’ opening group games, it will be his first cap for his country since his one and only appearance for the nation back in November 2019.
