Gareth Southgate‘s side reached the Russia 2018 semi-finals and returned as heroes. However, Maguire thinks that times have changed and that more magnificent failure is no longer an option.

England faces a crunch quarter-final showdown with reigning champions France on Saturday looking to keep their dream alive. And Maguire insists his side has total belief they can go all the way at Qatar 2022.

The defender admits he has even dreamt of getting his hands on the trophy and he said: “I think that’s the one thing I’d say that’s a lot different from the 2018 squad to this squad.

“I think we really believe that it is possible. I played in 2018 and we got to the semi-final I think a lot of the lads were happy. You were happy to be part of the semi-final.

“You know that whatever happens in the semi-final, you’ll go home as a hero. You’d enjoy a warm welcome at home, and everyone would be slapping you on the back.

“I believe there is now a belief that we must win this tournament. It is a positive mental shift. Of course, we know how difficult it will be. I believe there are at least five or six other teams who share our conviction.

“However, we were most likely not one of those teams in 2018. There are only about five or six people who believe this, and we are one of them.”
