Fabrizio Romano has shined a light on Manchester United’s priorities moving into the January transfer window, with the futures of Alejandro Garnacho, Diogo Dalot, and Marcus Rashford, as well as the necessity to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, important to their thinking.
According to the credible source, the club is deciding what to do next with these three players, all of whom will have their contracts expire in the summer if United do not agree on new terms or trigger their extension possibilities.
“Manchester United are debating next measures internally, so it’s time to decide the approach, budget is a crucial aspect after spending big money in the summer,” Romano stated in his daily briefing.
“New contracts are also an important topic: Dalot, Rashford, and Garnacho are the three top priorities, and conversations will take place with all of them until United decides on a new striker.
“In my opinion, United’s chances of finishing in the top four this season are dependent on who they can sign up front; let’s see what they do!”
Dalot is unlikely to be concerned about whether or not United signs a striker this winter, but he may be waiting to see if the club signs a right-back.
Of course, all three players may be looking to the club to demonstrate their desire to launch a genuine bid for silverware with a large acquisition, which could be difficult in the midst of the season.
In any case, the club will not let any of them walk away this summer for nothing and will seek extensions if needed.
That would simply postpone the problems, so United will do everything they can to secure these three players to new contracts as they look for a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.
The same can be said of Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, both of whom could see their status in the squad slip should a forward be brought in.
Cody Gakpo, in particular, operates in similar areas of the pitch to both of these players and – for the fee he would cost – would not be signed as a benchwarmer.
