Cristiano Ronaldo and his Portugal colleagues arrived in Doha as Qatar prepared for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which begins on Sunday.
The Portuguese team arrived at Hamad International Airport on Friday night, and all eyes were on Cristiano Ronaldo, who caused a significant stir this week following a stunning interview in which he said he felt “betrayed” by Manchester United and declared he had no regard for manager Erik ten Hag.
On Friday, United issued a new statement, claiming it had “taken appropriate procedures in reaction to Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent media interview.”
After his outburst, the superstar forward, who has more than 800 goals for club and country, appears to be on his way out of Old Trafford. However, he will be anxious to demonstrate to possible suitors that he can still perform on the grandest platform.
Ronaldo, 37, was unable to play in Portugal’s 4-0 friendly win over Nigeria on Thursday due to sickness but will be aiming to be healthy for their first match against Ghana on November 24. In Qatar, the Euro 2016 champions will also face Uruguay and South Korea.
The aging great has had a difficult season, having been punished by the club for a 1-1 draw at Chelsea after refusing to come on as a substitute against Tottenham last month.
During an interview with Piers Morgan, the 37-year-old said that Ten Hag “provoked” his behavior.
“I think he did it on purpose,” Ronaldo remarked. “I was irritated. I have no respect for him because he does not respect me.”
Ronaldo has been a peripheral figure on the field during the Dutchman’s first season in charge at United, scoring just once in the Premier League.
