Court set new attempted rape trial date in 2023 as Mason Greenwood receive re-bailed

Mason Greenwood has been re-bailed ahead of a pre-trial hearing scheduled for next February, according to court documents.

The Manchester United striker will stand trial on November 27, 2023, after being accused of attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behavior involving the same victim.

The trial is likely to last 10 days, according to the court.

The 21-year-old was re-bailed yesterday at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court, ahead of a pre-trial hearing on February 10, 2023.

The footballer spoke only once at the hearing, to confirm his name, residence, and date of birth at the outset of proceedings, with his sister and parents also in attendance.

 

He was previously granted bail in October, with restrictions that he does not contact witnesses, including the complainant, and that he remain at a Bowdon location.

Greenwood has been suspended by the Red Devils and placed on paid leave as a consequence of a police inquiry.

It comes after Greater Manchester Police (GMP) reported in January that “a male in his twenties” was arrested on suspicion of rape, assault, and a threat to kill following allegations made by a lady on social media.

The controlling and coercive behavior complaint dates from November 2018 to October 2022, and Greenwood is accused of making threatening and disparaging statements to the complainant, as well as accessing and monitoring her social media accounts, while the assault charge dates from December 2021.

The attempted rape is said to have taken place in October 2021.

Once the news of the allegations broke on social media, and GMP confirmed the arrest, Manchester United said in a statement released at the time that Mason Greenwood would not return to training or play matches “until further notice”.

Nike also notably suspended its sponsorship relationship with Greenwood, with the brand saying it was “deeply concerned” about the allegations.

EA has too removed Greenwood from active squads on its FIFA 22 game.
