Atletico Madrid fans launch online protest after Cristiano Ronaldo transfer plans

Supporters of Atletico Madrid are banding together to try to prevent their team from acquiring Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United this summer.

Ronaldo has notified United that he wants permission to leave the team. He is dissatisfied with the lack of hiring during the transfer window so far and is eager to participate in the Champions League the next season in order to enhance his reputation in the league.

For family reasons, the 37-year-old has been absent from United’s pre-season tours of Thailand and Australia. Several clubs have been connected with him recently, including Chelsea, Napoli, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Atletico Madrid.

Atletico Madrid has been the most consistent name in rumors, owing to their ability to offer Ronaldo Champions League football as well as a return to the city where he lived for nine years. To comply with La Liga‘s financial constraints, Diego Simeone’s side would apparently need to drastically decrease their pay cost in order to sign Ronaldo – and there could be another stumbling block.

Ronaldo turned out for Atleti’s arch rivals Real Madrid between 2009 and 2018 and Los Colchoneros fans are therefore not keen on his arrival at their club. Angry supporters have united behind the hashtag #ContraCR7 [AgainstCR7] on Twitter to voice their displeasure and hopefully influence the club’s decision.

“If this one comes to my Atleti, I will cancel my two subscriptions… We are not an asylum to collect scum,” one supporter tweeted. “This is not just about Atletico fans, every club’s fans should reject Ronaldo,” another added.
