Alphonso Davies fails to put Canada in a winning run after a great display vs Belgium

In Wednesday night’s game, the 22-year-old failed to convert a spot-kick to create history.

Alphonso Davies, Canada’s star player, blew a golden opportunity to create history against Belgium on Wednesday. The 22-year-old defender missed a penalty attempt to become the Maple Leafs’ first World Cup goal scorer in their opening Group F match.

Belgium was almost put on the back foot after Yannick Carrasco saw a goal-bound strike hitting his arm in his side’s penalty area. The match referee did not spot the infringement immediately but was notified by the Video Assistant Referee to have a second look. The decision was then given in favor of the North Americans.

However, and rather unfortunately, Alphonso Davies’s attempt from the spot could not find its way into the net with Thibaut Courtois making the save to keep his side in the game. Watch:

Interestingly, Thibaut Courtois’s feat made him the first goalkeeper to save a penalty for Belgium at the World Cup since 1966.
