According to reports, Ajax and Steven Bergwijn of Tottenham Hotspur have reached a €30 million (£25.9 million) agreement.
The 2021–22 season in North London for the Netherlands international was disappointing since Antonio Conte frequently skipped starting him in the last third.
The addition of Dejan Kulusevski severely reduced Bergwijn’s playing time after he already found himself in last place in the pecking order, behind Son Heung-min, Harry Kane, and Lucas Moura.
Bergwijn was anticipated to complete a transfer away from Tottenham, who have already strengthened their attacking ranks for the upcoming campaign by signing Richarlison from Everton in a £60 million deal.
The 24-year-move old’s to Ajax was predicted to be imminent, and according to journalist Mike Verweij of De Telegraaf, a deal has been reached.
Bergwijn, a Dutch attacker who spent six years in Ajax’s junior program from 2005 to 2011, is expected to sign a five-year contract with the club that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2027, according to Verweij, who reports that Ajax will pay €30 million (£25.9 million).
According to rumors, Everton and Manchester United were preparing to swoop in and steal the former PSV Eindhoven player with bids of up to £35 million.
Bergwijn, though, is believed to have set his sights on Ajax as his top choice and has turned down offers from the two Premier League clubs in order to secure a move back to his own country.
While on international duty last month, Bergwijn said that he was longing for a transfer away from Spurs, telling AD: “Have I discussed my future with Alfred Schreuder, the Ajax manager? I’m currently in Oranje, so we’ll take a look later.
“Clarity would be good if it came soon. All I have to do is go play. But it’s clear that I want to leave Spurs right now. Does it matter if my new team competes in the Champions League? Not even the top priority is that. Nevertheless, that would be lovely. The fact that I’m going to play is what matters.
“I had no issues over the winter because I wasn’t permitted to leave Spurs. In the most recent months, I received very little care there. I now want to perform somewhere every week.”
Bergwijn, who previously won three Eredivisie championships with PSV, is getting ready to depart Tottenham after spending the last two and a half years making 83 appearances across all competitions and contributing to eight goals and 10 assists.
Louis van Gaal, the manager of the Netherlands, had previously told reporters that Bergwijn should join Ajax as soon as possible before the 2017 World Cup in Qatar.
