Liverpool is reportedly getting closer to signing Morocco’s Sofyan Amrabat, with the second round of discussions scheduled after the World Cup.
Morocco advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in their history on Tuesday, defeating Spain on penalties.
Amrabat put in a terrific performance for his country and rejoiced by sharing an image on social media depicting him strangling Spain’s midfield.
The 26-year-old midfielder plays his club football for Italian side Fiorentina, where he has made 78 appearances since joining them in 2020.
Prior to joining Fiorentina, he was a member of Club Brugge, where he helped them win the Jupiler Pro League, and he spent the 2019-20 season on loan at Hellas Verona, where he was named Player of the Season.
Amrabat began his career in the Netherlands with Utrecht before moving to Feyenoord, where he won the KNVB Cup.
However, he has recently been linked with a move to England, and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is said to have visited with the player’s representation.
According to Footmercato, fresh conversations have been set for after the World Cup in Qatar, as Liverpool tries to improve their midfield.
The Reds have battled in the Premier League this season, finishing sixth in the rankings after winning only six of their first 14 games.
Liverpool was unable to sign a permanent midfielder last summer and was forced to settle for the loan signing of Arthur Melo.
Injuries and poor form have led to harsh criticism of Liverpool’s midfield, and with Jordan Henderson, Thiago, and James Milner all over 30, the club is desperate to reduce their average age.
