According to 90min, Pedro Neto of Wolverhampton Wanderers has been offered a contract by Manchester United.
The 22-year-old, who is a client of Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes, might be one of the players sold to balance the books at Molineux after Bruno Lage’s summer spending spree. The youngster has played for Portugal three times.
The Black Country team and Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes have reached a club-record signing fee agreement of £42.2 million.
While Wolves have already signed center-back Nathan Collins from Burnley for £20.5m and Portugal international Goncalo Guedes from Valencia for £27.5m.
The former Lazio man only returned to action in February after having a large period on the sidelines with a knee injury.
The Sun reported in March 2021 that United was considering a £50 million summer move for Neto as an alternative to Jadon Sancho.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did eventually sign Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, but Erik ten Hag wants to sign another wide forward during the summer transfer window.
The Dutchman was hoping to reunite with Brazil international Antony, but with Ten Hag’s former side Ajax putting a £70m asking price on the former Sau Paulo starlet’s shoulders, Manchester United seems unwilling to meet that valuation at this stage of the transfer window.
Prior to suffering his serious injury, Neto had scored five goals and provided six assists from 31 Premier League appearances for Wolves during the 2020-21 campaign.
The speedy and talented winger looked set to form part of Portugal’s European Championship squad before suffering injury heartbreak.
Despite going on a purchasing spree this summer, Wolves aren’t likely to let Neto go cheaply with five years still on his deal at Molineux.
But, if the Midlands club maintains its £50m stance, United’s efforts should be focused on reaching an agreement with Ajax for Antony, who is one of the most desired and skilled forwards in the world.
That is not to say Neto isn’t a matchwinner on his day; nevertheless, having only recently returned from a major injury, signing Wolves’ number seven would be a tremendous and perhaps costly gamble for Manchester United.
