Despite reports that Manchester United was considering giving the Portuguese superstar his exit papers, Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract will not be terminated.
The forward, 37, made it clear to the club hierarchy earlier this summer that he wants to leave Old Trafford and join a team that he believes is more compatible with his goals. However, offers from other parties haven’t exactly flooded in, so Ronaldo is still in Manchester.
He still has a year left on the two-year contract he signed last summer, but he cuts a frustrated figure as United struggles to find form. All eyes were on Ronaldo as he trudged off the pitch after Brentford thrashed his side 4-0 on Saturday evening.
That led to surprise reports that he could be sent packing. But the club has insisted that is categorically untrue, with a Manchester United spokesperson having insisted that “there is no change in the club’s position”.
The humiliating result leaves United rock bottom of the Premier League table after two games played, with the tricky test of Liverpool awaiting them in their next outing. It has been a nightmare start for new manager Erik ten Hag, who is the first United boss in more than 100 years to lose his first two league games at the helm.
In response to the 4-0 demolition job, Ten Hag ordered his misfiring players to report for training on Sunday – a day that they were all scheduled to have off. The Dutchman wanted them to run 13.8 kilometers during training because that is how much further Brentford ran than United on Saturday.
The former Ajax boss looked particularly helpless as he watched his game-plan unravel in spectacular fashion. Ten Hag could do little more than stand in his technical area and shake his head by the time the fourth goal went in inside the opening 35 minutes.
