Manchester United coach hoping to keep Cristiano Ronaldo till his retirement

Erik ten Hag, the new manager of Manchester United, said that Cristiano Ronaldo, 37, has the option of extending his stay at Old Trafford beyond this season.

Cristiano Ronaldo will likely remain at Manchester United past the current season, according to Erik ten Hag.

Ronaldo is believed to want out of Old Trafford and move to a club that qualified for the Champions League. However, the 37-year-old’s options are dwindling, and the Red Devils seem reluctant to let Ronaldo leave, with Ten Hag now confirming he sees him as part of his plans.

The Dutchman, when asked about the future of the former Ballon d’Or winner, said: “I am well informed, he also has an option, no? So, yes [Ronaldo could extend his stay].”

He continued: “I have signed here for three years, but in football, it’s short-term as well. We have to win from the start.

“So I don’t look that far ahead. I have a strategy, it’s a process, it takes time, but in the end, we have to make sure from the outset there is a winning team.”

Ten Hag believes Ronaldo can fit into his side: “I think Cristiano is capable of doing that. In his career, he has shown everything. I have set my demands. We want to play in a certain way. A top player can contribute and Ronaldo is an absolute top player in our squad.”

Ronaldo is not on United’s pre-season tour of Australia, and he was left behind due to ‘family reasons.

The 37-year-old was spotted training in Lisbon by himself by Sheffield United players – who are preparing for the new Premier League campaign in Portugal.
