Harry Maguire will continue to serve as Manchester United’s captain, according to Erik ten Hag.
Since his predecessor Ashley Young left Old Trafford in January 2020, Maguire has held the armband on an ongoing basis.
It had been suggested Ten Hag would contemplate naming a new captain with Bruno Fernandes and David de Gea among the likely options but the Dutchman is happy for Maguire to remain in the role.
Ten Hag, speaking ahead of United’s first pre-season match against Liverpool in Thailand, said of the captaincy: “Harry Maguire is the captain.
“He has and of course, I have to get to know all the players but he is the established captain and he has achieved a lot of success.”
The United manager also reiterated the club’s stance that Cristiano Ronaldo is not for sale.
He added: “He’s not with us, it’s due to personal issues.
“We are planning with Cristiano Ronaldo for this season. I’m looking forward to working with him.
“He hasn’t expressed a desire to depart to me. Despite what I’ve read, Cristiano is not up for sale. We have him in mind and hope to succeed with him.”
