Manchester United Wants Athletic Bilbao Youngster Despite Liverpool Interest

According to the Spanish media site, Fichajes, Manchester United is interested in signing Athletic Bilbao starlet Nico Williams during the summer transfer window, as Erik ten Hag looks to add to his attacking options.

‘Among all those teams that would soon be seeking for the signing of Nico Williams would be some from the category of Liverpool, Manchester United, and Real Madrid, with these being the first candidates to sign Nico Williams in the summer of 2023,’ according to the translated version of the story.

The Spaniard’s current deal at San Mames expires in the summer of 2024.

The Spaniard’s current contract at San Mames is set to expire in the summer of 2024.

Having come through the ranks at Athletic Bilbao itself, Nico Williams made his first team debut on 28 April 2021, coming on as a second-half substitute for Jon Morcillo in a 2–2 draw at home against Real Valladolid. Over the course of the past couple of years, the 20-year-old winger has made 57 appearances for The Lions, scoring seven goals and assisting five more across all competitions.

Even this season, he has put up some impressive figures in the Spanish top division, averaging 0.9 tackles, 1.7 shots, 1.4 crucial passes, 1.4 dribbles, and 0.6 crosses per 90 minutes. Furthermore, his adaptability allows him to step in on the left wing when needed.

If Manchester United decides to pursue him, it would be a shocking decision. Ten Hag just paid a large sum of money to import Antony from Ajax, who plays in the same position as Neco. So Nico Williams will have to settle for a spot on the bench, something he may not be happy with given his starting status at Bilbao.
