Liverpool is apparently interested in signing a talented Spanish forward with a £44 million release clause. He’s previously compared his style to Kylian Mbappé’s.
To make up for their lack of action in the summer, Liverpool may need to be active in the January transfer window, and while a midfielder will be the apparent priority, another attacker could be essential as well.
Apart from the center of the park, Liverpool is light on the right side of their assault. Mohamed Salah is the established first choice in the position, although unlike on the left, where Luis Daz and Diogo Jota may both compete for the berth when healthy, Salah has minimal competition in the starting XI on the right.
Given that Salah turns 30 this year, Julian Ward must consider Salah’s succession, even if he is under contract with the club until 2025. Liverpool will eventually have to identify an heir to Salah, and one such option may be a player who is roughly 10 years younger than the Liverpool captain.
As reported in the summer that Liverpool was keeping a close eye on Nico Williams, the brother of Inaki Williams, who was also on the Reds’ radar at one point.
The 20-year-old Athletic Bilbao player recently earned his Spanish national team debut and has been in terrific form. He is in Qatar for the World Cup, and according to Fichajes, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Real Madrid are all interested in signing him.
Williams has four goals and four assists in all competitions this season, averaging a goal contribution every 153 minutes in the league. That is already a much better return than during last season, which was his breakthrough campaign — where Williams made just four goal contributions in 40 games.
In fairness to him, only 14 of those appearances were from the start, with the then-teenager mostly coming off the bench. However, Williams now seems to have settled into senior football, and if he continues at the same rate, he should definitely remain on Liverpool’s radar; not just as a backup option for Salah, but as a future successor for the Egyptian.
Williams is a quintessential Jürgen Klopp player. He is explosive, blessed with great speed, and excellent in one vs one situations. This season he has so far proven he can also make an impact in the final third.
According to the AS report, Williams has a release clause of roughly £44m. That is perhaps a little steep for Liverpool to be paying for a player of limited experience.
“I’m a dribbler, like Neymar, (Ousmane Dembélé) and Kylian Mbappé,” Williams told TV3 last season.
All in all, Williams seems like an ideal signing for FSG and one who could be an astute buy for Liverpool. Iñaki may have slipped from the Reds’ grasp back in the day, but perhaps Nico shouldn’t.
