Next summer, Liverpool appears to be planning a midfield makeover, and sources suggest that their £103 million star target will be the first addition.
The Reds had been rumored to be interested in signing a midfielder all summer, and those rumors picked some steam after Thiago, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Curtis Jones sustained injuries.
Liverpool has been mentioned in transfer rumors this summer, but manager Jurgen Klopp has been quick to answer, often by stating that the best choice isn’t now available.
One report has stated that next summer we will see a midfield overhaul at the club, given the state of the aging and fringe players and the club has earmarked long-term target, Jude Bellingham, as the marquee signing.
Today’s reports have seen Simon Jones (Daily Mail Sport) claim Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham is expected to join Liverpool next summer. Talks may have even begun as we reported weeks ago that ‘progress’ had been made for a deal.
The midfielder will stay for another season in Germany and is likely to be involved in a transfer saga with top European clubs next summer as they all vie for his signature.
At the Liverpool Echo, Ian Doyle has stated: “We know the Reds are going to sign some midfielders next summer as part of an overhaul.”
That overhaul will surely see Bellingham as the main target and the signing of Matheus Nunes, who just joined Wolves, could also be an option according to some reports, even despite just joining the PL.
The Reds have issues to contend with in their midfield. For example, Naby Keita is in the final year of his deal and could move for free next summer if Liverpool doesn’t agree on a new deal.
Furthermore, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is considered a fringe player and could easily move on next summer. Curtis Jones hasn’t impressed the same way other younger players have and the signing of Fabio Carvalho suggests he too will struggle for game time.
James Milner is still a great player to have around the squad, but his quality is diminishing year on year and at 36, there may be a discussion to have next summer. Klopp will surely want to bring in at least two midfielders next summer with plenty of movement expected both in and out of Anfield.
A midfield overhaul will help the Reds to feel more settled in the middle of the pitch and re-invigorating the engine room can only propel them to new heights.
