A new update on Liverpool’s pursuit of Amadou Onana this summer has surfaced. The club has long been a fan of the midfielder.
The Athletic claims that Liverpool is vying with other teams to sign the 20-year-old.
As per the report, the Reds are joined by West Ham United, Arsenal, Newcastle United, and Nottingham Forest in their strong interest to snap up the Lille midfielder this summer.
West Ham has already submitted two failed bids for Onana, so Liverpool must improve upon the Irons’ efforts if they want to sign the player.
It was reported that Liverpool was making the midfield a priority for improvement following their club-record signing of Darwin Nunez last month, and a swoop for Onana could be the perfect opportunity for Jurgen Klopp to strengthen ahead of the Reds’ return to Premier League action next month.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita, and James Milner will all be out of contract this time next year, so it would be advantageous for the Merseysiders to identify replacements who can make a difference and have an instant impact on the trophy-chasing team ahead of next summer.
Jacek Kulig, a talent scout, described Onana as having “great skill.” Onana had one goal and three major chances created last season, while also making 0.5 critical passes and 1.5 tackles per game.
The £50 million jewel also showed he has tons of promise by winning the majority of his duels (59 percent) and completing the majority of his dribbling attempts (62 percent) across 32 Ligue 1 outings. He may undoubtedly develop into a player to watch in the future if he takes Klopp under his wing.
According to rumors, Liverpool is prepared to put off its midfield rebuild until next summer in order to recruit Jude Bellingham. However, they might jump the gun by buying the 20-year-old Lille star and offloading Oxlade-Chamberlain immediately, who has less than a year left on his Anfield contract.
Southampton and Manchester United have both been mentioned as prospective suitors for the £125k per week Liverpool midfielder, so Klopp may finally be able to get rid of the 28-year-old for a profit.
